Lent, thought for the week

So its Lent today, has anyone given stuff up? I finally decided on a couple of things i am going to give up/take up. At School of theology the other night Simon Ponsonby was talking about how often he thinks it is really good to take something up for lent, as lent can often seem to come across as a negative thing, giving up the things we love. But it could be really good to take something up to bring us closer to God. One of the things i decided to do today is to learn 40 new worship songs off by heart by the end of lent, to help me get out of using the same old songs each time i lead worship, and to really stretch me. I am unsure how i am going to manage to learn 40, but i am going to try my best, i think its possible :)

Also, each week we have started doing a thought for the week in the worship department where each week one of us (Lauren rich and us worship interns) are going to write a thought for the week to email out to the whole worship team. This week was my turn, so i thought i would share it with you in case anyone is interested, i will probably share each week with you written by the other guys so here’s this weeks…

I have been thinking lately a lot about being called to be a Lead Worshiper/Musician. We all know that our worship is a meant to be a lifestyle and not just a few songs on Sunday. But I think often we can overlook the importance of the role we play each time we step up on stage. God has been challenging me musically lately, basically saying ‘Hey I have given you this gift, now make the most of it!’ So often we find ourselves getting comfortable as the Sundays pass, playing the same songs, the same arrangements, often maybe we even go through the week without touching our instrument.

We know that our worship and the music we play in Church is to lead others into the presence of God, but for an audience of One, so we want to make it the best music we can. God doesn’t ask for half hearted worship that we have thrown together at last minute, he doesn’t ask for songs that we struggle through at the front of Church because we don’t know them well enough. He desires and requires worship that comes from deep within our heart, worship that we put everything into, riffs and chords, harmonies and lyrics that we have taken time during the week to practice.

One thing I have challenged myself to do lately is to commit to learning at least one new song a week off by heart, so I am making sure that I am stretching myself to use new songs and not sticking to the same old, I recommend setting yourself a challenge each week, maybe its learning a new drum pattern or honing the bass line you could never quite get right, or maybe its just setting aside 15 minutes each day to sing your heart out to God.

Whatever it is, lets try going that extra step to give God even more time in our weeks so on a Sunday it is the pinnacle of a week of worshiping Him.

God Bless,
Gaz

Next Generation…

So this weekend we are holding a conference here called the Next Generation Conference, which is pretty cool! I didn’t really know what to expect, but it turns out the first day was amazing! This evening a lady called Andrea Williams spoke, who heads up a christian thing that basically helps fight injustice for loads of stuff here in the UK, so for example you may of heard about the nurse the other week that got suspended for offering to pray for a patient. So Andrea and her charity thing were the ones who went in to fight injustice for her in law suites or whatever and now she has her job back and stuff! It turns out that now the nurse is legally allowed to ask the patients to tick or not tick a box that says do you have any ‘spiritual needs’ which means that she now has the right to ask every single patient if they want prayer! So because she stood up for her rights, she has more rights and more doors have opened!

The worship band is pretty fab this weekend too, a few guys have come back up from the conference who used to be in Aldates, (The Elites!) so it sounds amazing. One of last years interns came back too to lead, i had the pleasure of playing electric guitar in his band at Risky on Thursday night too, which was cool! He is such an amazing guy actually, such a natural worship leader, and an honest worship leader. He just seems to carry around the holy spirit with him and has the ability to just take people straight into the presence of God it seems!

One thing that stuck out to me about him was tonight a few of us went to the bar after the conference, and after we were just stood outside chatting about to go our seperate ways, and suddenly Owen starts walking off in the opposite way, and we were like where is he going now? It turns out they had noticed a guy sat on the floor selling the Big Issue, so as we were just talking, he had gone out of his way to go and sit with him and chat with him. He then ran off to go and buy him some food. Now that’s what i call a worship leader. :)

Oriel College

Tonight a few of us went to a formal dinner at Oriel College, along with Sarah (Steves Girlfriend) Who studies at Oriel! And it was so good! The food was lovely, and the college is awesome! Reminded me of Hogwarts! i thought i would take a couple of photos too so here we go…

Check this, this was like a little street, but still in Oriel college! Amazing it was like a little enclosed village!!

Breaking News

So i thought i would share with you a little of the fun i got up to last Thursday! Basically at St Aldates, on Sundays instead of someone standing up and reading the notices in a not so exciting fashion, they play a video, called The Essentials. So on Thursday at the Student event they do a Simular one called Breaking News. Mark and Alanna usually present it but couldn’t this week, so they asked me to do it, and i had so much fun i thought i would share it with you…

Just Got back…

From a lovely weekend back at home. I managed to get a slightly longer weekend and got home on Thursday evening, which was lovely. I spent valentines day with my lovely Katie, and had a really good time seeing her and family n stuff :) It was a really exciting weekend actually :)

I am now home, ready to get up at 6am tomorrow :( I am also going out for a meal with my family tomorrow too, as they are staying down in Oxford tonight to see my cousins tomorrow in London.

So yeh, thought i would let you know how the weekend went. On Saturday night actually me and Katie watched Micheal Macintire DVD which is amazing! If you haven’t seen him you need to! He’s hilarious! So that was cool :)
